Introduction:
Hey everyone!! This year we will be working on pieces by a variety of composers, but unlike past years, we are going to get to know our composers before playing the music! Each of you has done research on a president or other historical figure before, but have you ever thought about the composer whose piece you're playing? That is what this project is about: to use your prior knowledge on how to research to get to know and understand the composers we are going to be playing this year.
Task: |
Process: |
Work in groups to educate the class on the upcoming composers for the year. You will choose from a list of composers given below, and work in groups of four (assigned by me) to create an all inclusive presentation, paper, and analysis of the score of the composer chosen. Each composer is only chosen once. All parts of the project will be due the same day, TBA.
Composers and Pieces:
Groups:
Presentation should include: All names of group members composer: full name, birth date and death date, hometown, growing up, family life, education, musical background (including what instrument they played, did hey go to school in education, who did they study under, etc), important or noteworthy works, and other biographical information you find appropriate. Piece: title, year of completion, first performance, instrumentation, analysis. Pictures of composer, and brief picture of the piece you are covering. Recording of the piece assigned. Reference page. Analysis should include: composer, title, movements, length, instrumentation, structure, important solos, melodic line, harmonies, homophonic or polyphonic. Key signature, historical context if applicable, musical style, etc. Paper should include: everything in the presentation and analysis in written form. This is a collaboration between four people, so google documents is a suggested format for all of you to work on and keep up with the work. This is a collaboration so the work must be equally done, also the paper should sound like one person wrote it not four different people. There should be an introduction and conclusion with body paragraphs explaining the composer's life and the analysis of the piece. Also include a reference page at the end (As told by the standards from the school). |
Who is the composer of the work? What is he known for?
Did the life events of the composer influence their work? Name of piece? When and where was it written? historical context of the work? Why was the piece written? Musical styles? Themes and motifs of the piece? What chordal sequence does the piece end with? How about each movement? Resources:
IMSLP: a free database where you will be able to get scores on your composer. If you are unable to find your composer here, because it has not been 70 years after their death, come talk to me and I will let you look at my score.
YouTube: you can use this site to find recordings of the piece of music you will be analyzing and showing the class. Musicalics: a website where you can find information on your composer Musicedmagic: a website where you can find information on your composer Classical Net: a website where you can find information on your composer Music Theory: to help with analysis of the piece. I am here if you need help as well. Please use your notes from previous classes to help with the assignment as well. Evaluation:
